SQL Database Engineer
About the role

In this role you will help design, operate, and improve the relational database platforms that support our core systems and applications. Working closely with infrastructure and engineering teams, you will ensure our SQL environments remain reliable, secure, and capable of supporting growing workloads.

You will focus on performance, availability, and operational automation across our database stack. The role combines hands‑on database engineering with continuous improvements to reliability and operational practices, ensuring our SQL platforms scale effectively as our systems evolve.

What you'll do
  • Operate and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments across cloud and virtualised infrastructure.

  • Support additional relational database platforms such as PostgreSQL and MySQL where required.

  • Maintain high availability using technologies such as Always On Availability Groups, SQL Server clustering, and replication.

  • Optimise database performance through query tuning, indexing strategies, and troubleshooting performance bottlenecks.

  • Automate database operations such as provisioning, patching, backups, and scaling using scripting and infrastructure automation tools.

  • Work with development teams on schema updates, migrations, and database-related application changes.

  • Monitor database health, capacity, and performance, resolving production issues when they arise.

  • Implement and maintain database security controls such as access management, encryption, and auditing.

  • Contribute to operational improvements through automation and alignment with DevOps delivery practices.

  • Participate in a shared on-call rotation supporting critical production database systems.

What you'll bring
  • Experience managing Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL) environments in production systems.

  • Familiarity with high availability technologies such as Always On Availability Groups, SQL Server clustering, and replication.

  • Strong experience in query optimisation, indexing strategies, and troubleshooting performance issues.

  • Experience managing database backups, restores, and point-in-time recovery.

  • Proficiency with automation and scripting using tools such as PowerShell.

  • Familiarity with cloud-hosted SQL environments such as Google Cloud SQL, Azure SQL, or SQL Server on virtual machines.

  • Understanding of Windows Server environments and clustering technologies.

  • Knowledge of database security practices such as access control, encryption, and auditing.

  • Experience collaborating with engineering teams on database changes and platform improvements.

  • Strong troubleshooting mindset and the ability to operate production systems reliably.

  • Willingness to challenge existing services and identify opportunities to improve technology choices, platform setup, and cost efficiency.
